UEFA poised to vote on suspension of Israel amid escalating pressure

Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is preparing to vote on suspending Israel from European club and national competitions.

The move comes amid mounting pressure from civil society and UN experts following the Gaza conflict.

According to The Times, a majority of UEFA’s executive committee is expected to support barring Israeli teams and national sides. The paper claims UEFA will formalise this decision in a session next week. The reported motion follows calls from a group of UN advisers urging both FIFA and UEFA to act after a UN commission concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

Earlier, UEFA had faced increasing scrutiny over its consistency, especially in light of its suspension of Russia from European football since 2022. Critics argue that allowing Israeli sides to compete undermines the integrity of sporting bodies in responding to grave human rights violations.

In public statements, UEFA and FIFA have avoided explicit endorsement of suspension. However, the body faces pressure from protests across Europe and the UN’s recent admonitions. Sky News reports that while discussions are taking place at high levels, no final decision has yet been taken. Sky News

If UEFA proceeds, the implications would be profound — Israeli clubs may be excluded from European competitions, and the national team could face suspension. Such a move would also raise questions about how FIFA would respond, especially with Israel still participating in qualification matches for international tournaments.
